# Rain, Sun and 30+ New Faces: Recapping the Fuse Budapest Guided Tour

More than 30 Fuse tenants walked Budapest's landmarks in two hours, rain and shine both. Here's how the first guided tour actually went.

On Saturday 5 September, more than 30 Fuse Budapest tenants met at Kossuth Lajos tér for the first Fuse Budapest Guided Tour, a free two hour walk through seven of the city's best known landmarks. What nobody could have planned for was the weather: in the space of two hours, the group got moody grey skies, a burst of rain, and clear blue sunshine, in roughly that order. It felt, by the end, like four seasons had happened in one afternoon.

## A Bigger Turnout Than Expected

With 50 spots on offer, more than 30 tenants showing up is a genuinely strong turnout for a first event. The group was a mix of students who had just landed in the city days earlier and wanted to get their bearings fast, and others who had already been [living in Budapest](https://fusestays.com/cities/budapest) for a while but had never actually done the classic sightseeing loop through their own neighbourhood. Both groups ended up walking side by side, swapping notes on the city as they went.

## Four Seasons in Two Hours

Budapest weather in early September has a reputation for being unpredictable, and this walk proved it. The group gathered under heavy, dramatic cloud cover on the Parliament lawn, sheltered briefly under the plane trees near the fountain at Elizabeth Square as a shower passed through, and by the time everyone reached the Chain Bridge, the sky had cleared to a bright, cloudless blue with Buda Castle lit up across the river. Layers and a compact umbrella, it turns out, are as essential to a Budapest walking tour as comfortable shoes.

## The Route, Stop by Stop

The walk traced a loop through the heart of Pest, led by a guide who actually lives in the city, finishing at the building everyone had really come to see.

* St. Stephen's Basilica: the starting point and Budapest's largest church, a good spot to get your bearings before the rest of the walk
* Elizabeth Square: one of downtown's green centres, and where the group sheltered from a passing shower under the plane trees by the fountain
* Vörösmarty tér: the square at the top of Váci utca, cafés and benches and a good dose of people watching
* Danube Promenade: the view every postcard is trying to copy, the river with the Buda Hills across it, and a walk out onto the Chain Bridge itself as the clouds finally broke
* Hungarian Academy of Sciences: a grand nineteenth century palace right on the riverbank
* Liberty Square: one of the city's most photographed squares, ringed by embassies and history
* The Parliament Building: the finale, back at Kossuth Lajos tér, Budapest's most iconic building up close and personal

## Why This Kind of Thing Actually Matters

A guided tour is a small thing on paper, two hours, [no cost](https://fusestays.com/blog/free-cheap-things-to-do-budapest-students), a loop most Budapest residents could probably do blindfolded. But for someone who arrived in the city a week earlier and hasn't yet worked out [which tram gets them anywhere](https://fusestays.com/blog/getting-around-budapest-student-transport-guide), it does something a map app can't: it turns a new city into a place with landmarks you've actually stood in front of, alongside a group of people in the exact same position as you. Several of the people who showed up hadn't met another Fuse tenant before the walk started.

## What's Next

The Riga version of this walk was rescheduled to Sunday 4 October. There's no date set yet for the next Budapest walk, so keep an eye on the [events page](https://fusestays.com/events/budapest). Next on the calendar after the walk was the Fuse Budapest Welcome Party on Friday 18 September at The Downtown Budapest in Gozsdu Udvar, open to tenants and their friends alike. From late September, Fuse Budapest also started weekly get-togethers hosted by its student ambassador, beginning with a brunch picnic on Margaret Island on 26 September.
