How Does Booking with Fuse Work? Steps, Fee and Deposit Explained

How booking a Fuse room works, step by step: the documents you upload, the €295 membership fee, the deposit per city, contract lengths, signing online and move-in day.

Most student housing platforms make you feel like you're applying for a mortgage. Long forms, unclear timelines, and a landlord on the other end who takes four days to reply and then ghosts you. Fuse works differently, and not in the vague marketing sense. The whole booking is done online with no viewing: you pick a room and dates, add your details, upload your ID and proof of why you're moving, check your contract details, pay the €295 membership fee to hold the room, then sign your tenancy agreement online. After that, you pay your deposit and first month's rent by bank transfer.

Here's exactly how it works, from the moment you land on the site to the moment you collect your keys.

Step One: Browse and Filter

The starting point is the listings page at fusestays.com. You filter by city (Budapest or Riga right now; Vienna and Prague are coming soon, with no rooms yet), your preferred move-in date, your budget, and your preferred room type: flatshare, coliving or private apartment.

What you see in the results is the actual available inventory for your dates, not a catalogue of options that may or may not be available by the time you enquire. Each listing shows the room type, the monthly price (which includes rent, utilities and WiFi; in Budapest a fair use limit applies to utilities), the contract lengths available, and enough about the building and the neighbourhood to make a real decision.

The contract lengths are fixed-term: 5, 6, 10 or 12 months, starting on the 1st or 15th of a month, with rent paid monthly throughout. Shorter contracts cost more per month and 12 months has the lowest rate: Fuse rooms start at €380 a month in Budapest and €250 in Riga on a 12 month contract, and each room page shows the exact price for every length. If you're doing a semester, 5 or 6 months typically matches your dates. If you're doing a full academic year, 10 or 12 months is the right range. The listing will show which lengths are available for the room you're looking at.

One thing worth doing at this stage: check a couple of listings in both available cities if your university placement gives you flexibility. Budapest and Riga have different price points, different neighbourhood layouts and different social scenes. The listings page is the fastest way to compare them practically rather than in theory.

Step Two: Your Details and Documents

Once you've found a room that works, you choose your move-in date and your preferred contract length. There's no lengthy upfront application at this stage. You're selecting the room and your terms, not filling out a form that asks for your entire financial history before you've even confirmed you want the place.

From there you go through Fuse's own checkout. First you add your details: name, email, phone, date of birth, nationality and why you're moving. Fuse is for people relocating for studies, internships, a first job, volunteering, Erasmus or another exchange, for at least 5 months. Then you upload two documents: your passport or national ID card, checked with a photo, and proof of your stay purpose, such as an enrolment letter, internship agreement or job offer. You have 48 hours to upload them, and you pay nothing at this stage: our team checks your documents first.

If you have specific questions before you book, WhatsApp and support@fusestays.com both connect you directly to the Fuse team, and on WhatsApp a real person from our team answers. Most common questions (availability for specific dates, what's included, neighbourhood questions) are answered in the FAQs at fusestays.com/faqs, and it's worth checking there first since the answers are usually faster than waiting for an email.

Step Three: Hold Your Room and Sign Your Contract

Once your documents check out, you see your contract at a glance: room, dates, rent, deposit and the 7 days to change your mind, with the house rules one tap away. Then you pay the €295 membership fee by card on Stripe's secure payment page. Your room is held from the moment this payment goes through, and you then sign your tenancy agreement online, within 48 hours. Read it before you sign. Fixed-term contracts are binding for the length you selected, so this is the right moment to make sure the dates are correct, the contract length matches your programme, and you understand the cancellation and deposit terms. A few minutes here saves a lot of difficulty later.

The contract is signed digitally, which means you can do it from wherever you are without needing to print, scan or physically be anywhere. After signing, you pay your deposit and first month's rent as two bank transfers to two different accounts. The deposit and the first month's rent are due by the 27th of the month before you move in. If you sign after that day, both are due 3 days after you sign, and always before you move in. Every month after that is due by the 27th of the month before. The deposit is 2 times the base monthly rent in Budapest and 1.5 times in Riga, where the base rent is the monthly price minus the €135 utilities part.

A couple of practical notes on this step. If you change your mind, there is a 7 day cooling-off period after signing: your security deposit and any rent you have already paid are refunded in full, but the €295 membership fee is not, as your membership began when you paid it. If you don't sign within the 48 hours and haven't asked for more time before they end, the room goes back on the market and the fee is kept. And your contract is with Fuse's local company: Fuse Living Kft. in Budapest and SIA Fuse Hotel Latvia in Riga. The one exception is Gát utca 19, a Budapest residence run by Fuse, where the building's landlord, SaniTóth Novum Kft., is the housing provider on your contract.

Step Four: Arrive, Get Settled, Meet Your Housemates

This is the part most housing processes underdeliver on. You've signed a lease with a stranger, paid money to an account you haven't verified in person, and now you're landing in a city you might never have visited before.

At Fuse, we email you directions and how to collect your keys by the day before you move in, once both payments are in, and you can check in from 15:00 on your start date (earlier only with our written approval). Want to arrive early? Ask us in advance: an early move-in depends on availability and may cost extra.

Once you're in, email support@fusestays.com for maintenance: we acknowledge reports and respond within 1 business day, and if the issue isn't caused by you, Fuse covers the cost. For quick questions, the team is on WhatsApp.

The communal spaces are where the rest of your move-in really happens. If you're in a coliving setup, you're likely moving in alongside other students who just arrived too. The first week or two at Fuse tends to be social in a way that's organic rather than organised, because everyone is new, everyone is curious about the city, and the shared kitchen is where that begins. Fuse members also get resident events in their city all year round.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Start

You don't need to have visited the city. The remote booking process is designed for students who are booking from abroad, often from a country on the other side of Europe. No in-person viewing required, no local references needed.

Check availability early for September starts. If you need a room for the start of a semester, book early. If your semester starts in September and you're browsing in June or July, some room types and contract lengths will already be limited.

The price you see is the price you pay. Utilities and WiFi are included in the monthly figure shown on every listing. Beyond the €295 membership fee, your rent and your deposit, there are no other charges. The one exception is fair use in Budapest: if the utilities of your room or flat go above €70 in a month, the extra can be charged. Riga has no fair use limit.

Visa confirmation letters. If you need a housing confirmation letter for a student visa or university application, contact the Fuse team directly via the contact page. This is a common request from non-EU students and the team is set up to handle it.

Your contract is fixed-term. Whether you sign for 5, 6, 10 or 12 months, that's the commitment. A change in your plans, a course adjustment, or a visa situation after signing doesn't automatically change the contract. Rent remains payable until the end of your contract even if you move out earlier. To leave early, Fuse's FAQ sets the notice per city: in Budapest, including Gát utca 19, at least 90 days' written notice and an early termination fee equal to one month's rent; in Riga, at least 2 months' written notice. To stay longer, tell us at least 30 days before your contract ends. Read the terms before you sign and ask questions beforehand if anything is unclear.
